Web Design Tips & Advice from A to Z

Web Design Tips - A

This is a guest article from Natalie Schnotz*. Enjoy her web design tips.

Avoid flashy multimedia. Flashy graphics and multimedia may look nice, but they can make it hard for your visitors to get the information they want from your site, especially when viewing from a non Flash compatible device.

Browser compatibility. Make sure you check your page on Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Safari & their different versions. These five web browsers make up about 95% of the world’s browsers. So, test your site out on each of them.

khả năng tương thích trình duyệt : hãy chắc chắn bạn đã kiểm tra qua các trinh duyệt Explorer, firefox, opera, chrome, và safari, cùng các trình duyệt khác.

Clean layout. Don’t fill your page up with ’stuff’. White space is good – it enhances the look of your site. Try to keep your content as the focus of your site. Use fonts that will be available on all computers so your page doesn’t end up looking messy.

Design for all screen resolutions. If you design stretch layouts that can fit any screen resolution, you can ensure all your visitors see a visually appealing and professional site. A site that is easy to use and appealing to the eye will encourage your visitors to stay longer.

Exclamation points! Typing millions of exclamation points doesn’t make your statement any more important than if you use just one!!!!!!! See, I told you.

Frames. Don’t use frames. While frames make it easy to have the same header or menu appear throughout the site, the address bar doesn’t change when you go from page to page – making it impossible for someone to link to a specific page.

Grammar and spell checker. Sure, people who are not good spellers will never notice you spelled calender (spelled calendar) wrong but literate people will notice. Try your best to fix up your spelling & grammar.

Hotlinking. Any pictures or music that you link to should be hosted on your own server. Don’t hotlink to other site images – it’s typically considered theft of bandwidth and you could be violating a copyright.

Identity. Ensure your site has a brand identity that reflects your brand values. Try to avoid cliche stock imagery.

Just keep swimming. (Yes, that’s a Finding Nemo reference.) Don’t give up. Sometimes your ideas won’t work, but just keep swimming. Today people tend to quit or give up too easily. With a little hard work, you’ll find most of your ideas are actually possible.

Web Design Tips - K

Keep learning. Stay up to date with news by reading design blogs or try learning a new web language. There is no reason to stop learning about web design just because you’re page is up and running with decent traffic.

Load time. Make sure that your load time is low. In our fast-paced world, we don’t like to wait. I want to see your web page and I want to see it NOW. Try minimizing graphics, flash and scripts as they increase your file size. Also, make sure to optimize your code and delete any unwanted tags or unused scripts.

Thời gian tải trang . hãy chắc rằng thời gian tải trang là thấp nhất, bởi chúng ta ko muốn pải đợi chờ, cố giảm bớt đồ họa thấp và flash và scripts.

Minimize clicking. Put as few clicks between your visitor and your information as possible. The more you force your visitors to click around your site, the more you are telling them to go away.

Navigation. Site navigation plays a huge role in determining how long visitors stay and explore your site. If you have an easy to use navigation system, you’ll keep your visitors around longer.

Organisation. The way you organise your content, is as important as what your page looks like, so spend some time on it. If your readers can’t find what they are looking for, they’ll just go look someplace else.

Page length. While you want to make sure you put a lot of information on each page, don’t go too far by putting too much information. If you are posting really long articles, try chunking them into separate pages with six or seven screenfuls to each page.

Quit stealing content. Don’t copy and paste text from another website without asking the site owner for permission. Search engines know if you are copying content and they don’t like it – they’ll lower your page rank without asking any questions. See SEO tips.

Readable text. Make sure your text is big enough to read. I know, you’re probably thinking ‘thank you captain obvious.’ Well, I hate to state the obvious, but I am amazed at the number of sites I go to that I have to squint to read. Please, don’t punish me for actually wanting to read your content.

nội dung dễ đọc,chắc chắn chữ của bạn là đủ lớn để đọc, thật ngạc nhiên trc số lượng những trang web mà tôi pải cố đọc .

Scalability. Make sure that your design and coding are scalable. Technology is changing rapidly, screens are getting larger (and smaller too), making it hard to test your site on all screens and platforms. Making a scalable site is crucial with the way technology is constantly changing.

Text lines. Learn a lesson from the newspapers. The reason why newspapers print articles in columns is because it makes the lines short and easy to read. So, as a general rule of thumb, no line of text should be more than about 600 pixels wide.

Các dòng text. hãy học từ việc làm báo, lý do tại sao các báo in ấn các bài trên các cột là bởi nó khiến các dòng ngắn hơn và dễ đọc hơn.do vậy theo một quy luật chung thì ko nên để các dòng chữ có độ rộng lớn hơn 600 px

Use contrasting colors. It’s hard to read dark text on a dark background and light text on a light background. I know this tip is obvious, but remember that some color combinations just don’t work.

Valuable content. Give your visitors a reason to stick around. Provide them with valuable content. They’ll be happy and keep checking out your site.

Windows. It’s a good idea to pop up brand new windows for external links – that way your reader can continue reading your content and look at the other site. However, if you are directing them to another page on your site, use internal links. Opening links in new windows means that after five clicks within your site, your reader has six windows open cluttering their screen.

Editor’s note: This has has been debated before and I personally prefer having all windows open in the same browser.

eXplain what you’re linking to. Don’t just put a link in the middle of your article for no reason. Take a second to tell your readers why you think they should click the link. By telling them what you are linking to, you are giving them a chance to decide if they really want that extra information.

You don’t need permission to link. There is no reason for you to contact the site owner asking if you can link to their site. The reason their page is online is because they want to share it. So, if you want to link to a site… just do it.

Z - Z is a letter that Americans use in such words as ’specializing’ and ‘criticize’ however you should be aware that other countries spell these words with an ’s’. Brush up on your spelling differences, so you’re not later criticised.

Guideline for The Principles of Design ( basic of design)

Design and visual art provide visual communication language between the artist and the viewers to deliver message or idea through the viewers eyes’ contact with the visual elements in the design, photo or artwork.

Before continuing reading this post did you already join our Twitter and subscribe to our RSS feed? If not, rush and join us now to receive updates of new posts and free resources.

However, there are some rules that control the relation between the eye and visual elements and allow better communication between them without lose of any information or misleading the visual communication flow. Through the ages of art history, there are basic rules that are applied in different visual artwork to control this relation between the artwork and the audience.

Although the idea is important in delivering the art concept or the design idea, using these rules ensure the delivery for the design idea. There are great design ideas that users even do not look at it because it is either noisy or complicated…etc.

However, in this article we will discuss the basic design principle that forms the first steps that you should consider when creating a design or artwork.

Simplicity

The first rule is to be simple. Complicated ideas and designs do not get but standing alone with no one attracted to it and this is the last thing you want when you create a design and artwork. Although some designs may require complicated visual form, but it is not the rule, and it follows specific circumstances.

The design simplicity applies not only on the design elements used in the design, but also applies to the number of colors, lines, curves, light and shadows in the design. For example, the design many include limited number of images, but in the same time, it includes a lot of colors that make the overall design complicated and not simple for the eye of the audiences.

In the below example, you can notice that this digital art consists of only one tree object and the design colors are in monochrome style, which simplify the number of colors in the design.

The Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds divides any visual design or artwork to two vertical lines and two horizontal lines, each of the created thirds are equal in size and dimensions. These four lines create four intersected points on the design as you can see in the figure below.

Guideline for The Principles of Design

The rule tells us that the most attractive areas in the design are the areas where the design element intersected with two of either the vertical or the horizontal thirds such as the example below.

Guideline for The Principles of Design

Design by Rafiq Elmansy

This is one of my digital artwork that I have done couple of years ago based on ancient Egyptian motives about envy. You can notice that the most important part in artwork is the hand and the blue eye inside it. However, this part is placed in the top two thirds and continues to flow to the bottom of the image.

Why to Use the Rule of Thirds

The idea behind applying the rule of thirds is that the center of the first common place where to add the elements in the image. When the objects are places on a different place other than the image center. The human eye attracts to the objects around the center of the image that are located in any of the four points where the thirds lines intersect.
You can use the rule of thirds to get the viewer attention to specific part in the design or certain words.

Guideline for The Principles of Design

Design by Rafiq Elmansy

The above design adds the most the important part of the text in the bottom two thirds where the rest of the words are spread all over the design with different sizes and opacity values.

How to Apply the Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is a guide to get the attention of the eye when it first looks to the design, photo or artwork. However, it is not required to exactly put the image in the exact center of the intersected thirds lines. You just put the object in the nearest two horizontal or vertical thirds.

Some thirds are better than other in some specific topics. For example, the horizontal thirds are suitable for the landscape painting or photography, because this is following the natural vanishing point for the landscape distance.

On the other hand, use the vertical thirds in portrait photography or in adding vertical objects such as trees …etc.

Harmony

This concept refers to the unity of the design and having all the design elements compliant with the each other. The design elements should be natural and arranged with each other. For example, when they take a photo for a landscape, the photo elements should be related to each other and does not have a strange object in the photo.

The Harmony concept goes beyond the objects in the design and photo. You can apply the harmony concept in the colors and image style such as the below example.

Guideline for The Principles of Design

Design by Rafiq Elmansy

I took this photo for Saladin citadel in Cairo Egypt. And I choose to apply the colors to the image to give it more ancient feel through dramatic light effect on the photo.

Contrast

The contrast in design depends on the differentiation between colors and objects to attract the viewer to specific part or object in the design or the photo. The contrast can be applied using colors by giving the object of focus different color than the general scheme of the design. For example, you can use the white color over black background to get the attraction to the white area in the design.
The following photo shows a contrast between the white flower and the environment around it to get the eye attraction to the flower object as the most important part on the photo.

Guideline for The Principles of Design

Movement

Although the still images do not include animation or movement, but the movement concept refers to give the objects in the design a moving action. For example, when you take a photo for standing people, make sure to let them appear as they are not frozen statues. They can do some kind of action or movement to break bored standing still position.

Guideline for The Principles of Design

Photography by Radwa Samir

In the above photo for me and my two daughters, all of us are doing an action and appear like moving.

Conclusion

The above rules guide you while building your design or artwork to the best methods to communicate well with the viewer eyes to deliver your idea or concept clean and with all the possible means such as the colors, objects, lights and shadows.

These guides are not restricted rules; on the other hand, these rules are just guidelines for you to follow. You can apply any of these rules or all together based on your needs in the design
